Books of Hope Rocks the Harlem Book Fair
Books of Hope is no stranger to the Harlem Book Fair. Thanks to Program Director, L. Soul Brown’s determination to expose BOH to good learning opportunities, this is the third time BOH has traveled to New York City to represent themselves and their writing.
Eaaaaaarly last Saturday morning, ten BOH student authors (Claude, Keisha, Anthony, Zanterius, JMasse, Jessica, Ilda, Anathalie, Manisha, Rose) met for the 4-hour van ride down to NYC. They had all the gear: the canapĂ©, tablecloths, bookmarks, and BOH literature to distribute. When we were all set up, many of them had the courage to stand out in front of the booth, in the gauntlet of pedestrians, to win the attention of curious fair-goers with a few words. “Young people speak out! Young people in action!” they shouted to entice book lovers. Penguin books was right across the way, but they were no competition!
It was a long hot day, but the atmosphere was festive and positive. There were shaved ice vendors with colorful flavors like cherry, mango, and lemon-lime to cool us off. It reminded me of being younger and going to the Franklin Park Kite Festival or Canobie Lake amusement park. Live drumming and other music boomed from the main stage. A young girl got up to sing “Lift Every Voice.” Five of the authors from Books of Hope also got up on stage to read their newly published poetry in the Big Apple. It was an impromptu performance, but several of them rose to the occasion to be heard and to share their brilliance with the crowd: Anthony Cimea, Claude Simon, Zanterius Broadus, Anathalie Jean Louis, and Ilda Joseph. It was a triumphant day—we sold many books. I watched BOH perform and was also musically inspired by the students singing a Haitian gospel tune in the van. In the wee hours of the night on our return drive to Boston, we listened to amazing producer remixes of Nina Simone (thanks Soul). Overall a positive (but extremely long and grueling) day of book vending that ended way past midnight. Much praise to the Books of Hope family for representing the voice and power of young authors.

Books of Hope at Porter Square Books
Our crew overcame the heat and performed a great set for the crowd at Porter Square Books in Cambridge yesterday.
Zantarius read to a room full of book lovers:
And Samantha came out even though she's still recovering from being hit by a car a couple of weeks ago. What amazing dedication!
And of course Maishka wowed them as always.
And the film crew was there taping for the upcoming Books of Hope documentary. Check back for more info.

Two shows coming up!
If you're a local Somervillain or Cambridgian, come to Porter Square Books, located in the plaza right next to the Porter Square T stop. We're having a performance on Saturday, June 19th at 6:00pm.
Then, on Monday we have yet ANOTHER show! Celebrate the first day of summer by coming to Stone Soup's Open Mic night at the Out of the Blue Gallery at 106 Prospect Street in Cambridge. The event starts at 8:00pm.
Youth on tour, youth on poetry-fire! Be there, or be square!

BOH Intern Debut Post
Hello!
My name is Alia, and I am a volunteer editor/mentor at Books of Hope. I've been helping out Soul, Titi, and Jade since March, and it's been an inspiring experience for me. Learning from these powerful & creative women has seemed to spark the validity of my life, and my own writing. And of course -- the youth in this program are AMAZING. You need to see them to perform.
I'm serious!
Last night, the Books of Hope crew traveled to Providence, Rhode Island, where we performed at the lovely Blue State Coffee cafe on Thayer Street. Every Tuesday night, they invite poets far and wide to perform at Got Poetry! Live. What a warm group of poets! They welcomed Books of Hope with open arms, and we will definitely be back.
On Friday, we're going to Manchester, NH for yet another show!
Stay tuned for videos and photos from both these events -- or, we'll see you there!

Book release party at Somerville Library
The Book Release was a huge success. TWO local TV stations were there and the crowd was standing-room only. Though we got off to a bit of a late start (blame it on poet-standard-time), the BOH authors performed their work with power and emotion, and sold a good deal of product after the show.
Special guest BOH Founder Anika Nailah also read from her upcoming novel.
And as a surprise, we unleashed our secret weapon: tour t-shirts!
SCAT TV is making a full-length special on the Book Release, so hopefully we will have some great video footage coming up to share with everyone.
